It was '93 or '94-ish and probably in Eugene, Oregon. I was a girl in my very early 20s, with long curly brown hair, and probably wearing a pink peasant top and a Guatemalan wide-brimmed hat. Do you have that picture? I've wondered about it for years. There are absolutely no pictures of me on tour, since I was staunchly opposed to film back then (being from the polluted town where Kodak made film will do that to you).
(repost from DS Dan)

Hi friends and family! Hope your summer has been great!

This Friday we're hosting a "Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash" at 12 Galaxies in SF featuring live music from one of the hottest and most talented, up-and-coming bluegrass bands around - Montana Slim. They'll play two sets of rollicking good fun their "SF grass" music interspersed by sets of all things related Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead for your dancing enjoyment.

We'll also have long-time friends, family, special guests, video and more... So kick-off the Jerry Day 2008 weekend by celebrating the life of Jerry Garcia in his hometown neighborhood of San Francisco's Mission District (and feel free to bring a cake!).

$1 of every ticket sold goes to benefit "Jerry Day 2008"

We'll open the night with an encore version of a very rare video from 1975 of Jerry on a Catholic TV program called "Miracles". Father Miles Riley conducts an insightful and entertaining interview of a vibrant Jerry Garcia in his prime ("Blues For Allah"/"Legion of Mary" era). If you haven't seen this video before, this you don't want to miss. It lasts about 35 minutes and we'll start it shortly before 9pm.

Friday is also long-time Grateful Dead manager/author Rock Scully's birthday. We want to wish Rock a Happy Birthday too!

Hope to see y'all there!
Tropical Storm Bertha churns through Atlantic
Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
5:40 p.m. ET 7/6/2008
Both the Atlantic and eastern Pacific have active tropical systems. The Atlantic has Tropical Storm Bertha. The eastern Pacific has disorganized Tropical Depression 5-E.
Tropical Storm Bertha (60 mph) is located about 1055 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. The storm is racing west-northwestward through the central Atlantic at 20 miles per hour and is forecast to become a hurricane late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. A gradual slowing of Bertha's forward speed and a turn to a more NW track is expected over the next couple of days.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Pacific, Tropical Depression 5-E (35 mph), located about 190 miles west of Acapulco, Mexico, has been slow to further organize off the west coast of Mexico and may never become a tropical storm. Despite this, a tropical storm watch is in effect from Lazaro Cardenas to Manzanillo.
The disturbance is expected to follow a WNW course over the next day or so, paralleling the southwest Mexican coast and then veer westward south of Cabo San Lucas. Torrential rain will be the main legacy of T.D. Five-E. Flash flooding and mudslides are likely, especially in coastal mountains.

Rockin' a hundred years
by Jamie O'Meara

Converse celebrate their centennial with music tributes and charity

The much loved, signature sneaker of the hipster overclass continues to be the ubiquitous black Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star high-top. Though launched in 1917 as a basketball boot, the distinctive footwear - while never making claims to comfort - became synonymous with rock'n'roll counterculture in the late '70s, being most strongly associated with first-generation New York punks The Ramones, and varying rock scenes in a fairly uninterrupted fashion ever since. More than 750 million pairs later - making it the most successful shoe ever sold - Chucks are still the go-to shoe for folks both young and, well, not quite as young.

Building on that traditional musical affinity are several new lines of Converse Chucks coinciding with the company's 100th anniversary, beginning with three different styles paying homage to The Grateful Dead. Three variations have the Grateful Dead Live (Skull and Roses) artwork, the Steal Your Face album logo and, of course, dancing bear prints. Black Sabbath get similar treatment with a trio of tribute issues, and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, notably not a stranger to Converse himself (and probably singlehandedly responsible for their resurgent popularity in the early '90s), gets his own posthumous series. The so-called "Distressed" and "Tri-Stitch Scribbles" lines come in high-top and Cobain's preferred One Star styles, and feature just a simple discreet signature or artwork and lyrical scribbles from the dead rock star's notebooks. Wear and fray detailing is
added for that authentic "distressed" feel.

Currently, we are sponsoring free book discussions for Gary McKinney's new mystery novel, "Slipknot." "Slipknot" is a mystery featuring County Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, Deadhead.
Set the year before Jerry Garcia's death, "Slipknot" takes place in picturesque rural Washington, and revolves around the murder of a politically prominent environmentalist - who was going to decide whether a local forest is logged or not. The future of the local logging industry is dependent upon the decision - but so are the lives of the wildlife within the forest.
Gavin must figure out who the killer is, all the while quoting classic Grateful Dead songs, taking up jamming sessions, and dealing with his daughter's new "hippie" boyfriend.
If you are interested in learning more about "Slipknot," there are limited free copies available. If enough people are interested, a discussion group can be started.
This isn't spam - we just want to get the word out about a great book featuring the Grateful Dead. Since the music can be downloaded for free, why not allow the same in literature - except this offer is available for a limited time.
(04-23) 14:36 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The Dead will live on at UC Santa Cruz, in a way.

On Friday, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart are scheduled to announce that the archives of the legendary band - 30 years worth of correspondence, business records, merchandise and memorabilia, including stage backdrops, a large "Blues for Allah" stained-glass artwork a fan gave the band in 1978 and some of the life-size skeletons of the band members for the 1987 "Touch of Grey" video shoot - will be donated to the UC Santa Cruz archives. UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal is also scheduled to be on hand for the announcement, which, appropriately enough, will be made at the Fillmore in San Francisco, one of the most storied venues in Bay Area music history.

Ellen Law is one of the reasons that much of this material still exists. She was a teenager in the San Francisco psychedelic ballroom scene when the Grateful Dead first hit the stage in 1965. When she started working for the band in 1972, she was put in charge of Dead Heads, the casually formed fan club that came into being after the band invited its fans to write to the address of a San Rafael post office box printed on its 1971 eponymous album (colloquially known as "Skull & Roses" for the artwork that graced the cover). That opened the floodgates for a fan base whose devotion was unprecedented and remains unmatched in the history of rock 'n' roll.

They sent in letters, postcards, Christmas cards, gifts and handmade artwork. And Law, who worked for the band for the next 34 years, saved everything.

She also kept press clippings dating back to the band's inception in '65, photographs, tickets, back stage passes, handbills, promotional materials, business records, stage backdrops, posters, T-shirts and other Grateful Dead merchandise, issues of the band's erratically published '70s newsletter and the more regularly published Grateful Dead Almanac that began in the '90s, copies of all the band's posters, vinyl albums, CDs, videos, all the awards and the books written about the band, show files, cassette tapes of the hot line messages announcing tour dates, publishing information, thousands of fan-decorated envelopes mailed to the band's ticket office, even all the guest lists that went to the venues the band played.

"I was just the person that never shredded," Law said in a phone interview from her home in San Anselmo. "It started off in my little closet," at the Dead's headquarters on Lincoln St. in San Rafael, "and it kept growing and growing, and now it fills up a warehouse."

That's 2,000 square feet of a Marin warehouse, to be exact.

After the band ended following Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, the surviving members kept the office open, then finally shut down operations in the summer of 2006. In August that year they moved the extensive vault of the band's musical recordings in four refrigerated 18-wheelers to Los Angeles, where it is maintained by Rhino Records, which is licensed to release product from it. At that point, the question arose of what to do with the archive.

Both UC Berkeley, where bassist Phil Lesh was once a student, and Stanford, where his son now goes, made a pitch for it. But the Dead members ultimately chose Santa Cruz.

The connections between the band and the university are long and deep. They both came into existence at the same time, in the mid-'60s. Law's son-in-law, Cameron Sears, former manager of the Grateful Dead and now of Weir's band RatDog - is a UCSC alumnus, as is the daughter of Alan Trist, head of the Grateful Dead's publishing company, Ice Nine. Santa Cruz Music Professor Fred Lieberman has taught a class in the music of the Grateful Dead for years and has collaborated with Dead drummer Hart on two books. The campus radio station has a weekly show featuring the band's music called "Dead Serious."

"I think it's a perfect fit for Santa Cruz - the ethos of the band, the whole idea of community sharing, is really well matched with our campus," said Christine Bunting, head of special collections for McHenry Library, which will house the archive.

"Our campus has a great music program, and we're really interested in the study of American vernacular music and popular culture. We also have this whole side that's concerned with social justice and tolerance and community spirit. And I think that fits so perfectly with what the band has done and what the Dead Heads have sustained over the years."

McHenry, the university's main library, is currently closed for renovation and expansion. When it reopens in fall 2009, it will have a reading room dedicated to the archive, tentatively named Dead Central, which will be located right at the library entrance. The room will feature music playing and exhibitions of material from the archive, to be curated by Bunting, who, while she doesn't call herself a Dead Head, said she saw the band live several times and their music "helped me get through high school." She said Dead Central will be a place for fans and researchers alike to use as a resource, and she hopes to make as much of it as possible available online.

The archive's advisory board - dubbed Slugs & Roses, a blend of the university's banana slug mascot and the Dead's floral icon - includes Nion McEvoy, chairman and CEO of Chronicle Books, who also got his undergraduate degree from UCSC, and Bill Watkins, CEO of Seagate Technology, a major U.S. manufacturer of computer hard drives, who has committed in-kind technical support.

The library already has the archive of science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, Beat poet, painter and novelist Kenneth Patchen and the only intact collection of photographer Edward Weston's project prints in the world, according to Bunting. But this is the biggest archive the university has acquired.

It contains historic documents, such as the band's first recording contract, with Warner Bros. Records, and notes from band's weekly meetings. "That's really exciting," said Bunting, "because that's the kind of primary material that shows what their decisions were are the time they were making them." She said business files on the band's concerts contain "the contracts and tickets and box office receipts and the guest lists and itineraries. You see the progression from all the concerts and tours."

But the most interesting aspect of the archive, she said, is "the whole Dead Head side to it. The band's following is a phenomenon in itself."

How does Law feel about letting go of the archive she tended all those years?

"It's like sending your kids off to college: Oh, they're leaving home! That's what it feels like, even though now I know it will be preserved and well taken care of. It's another stage of development."
Anyone else here subscribe to the Grateful Dead newsletter in the early 70’s?

It was a quite informative snail mail about what the band was into back then, they invested in the development of holographic recording (CD anyone) estimation back then was that the player would be about the size of a pack of smokes and shaped like a small pyramid.
They also shared their vision of having a flying tour setup that would float from
Venue to venue, I would sure like to see some of the sketches of that, if there were any.

If anyone still has the newsletters (I haven’t found these on Dead net) I would love to re-read a copy of them now.
I just found this amazing website. I was on tour between 1990 and 1992; I played guitar went by an animal name at the time (you'll have to guess or PM me). Also hung out in the Haight, Mission, Telegraph, Eugene, Arcata, Santa Cruz, etc. I'm looking to reconnect with a few people or learn of their wherabouts, if only for my own interest:

Hi Friends,

Tonight (Monday) I will be spinning a nice selection of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, Legion of Mary, Reconstruction, Jerry Acoustic and all things Garcia related at Nickie's (466 Haight St @ Fillmore - SF, CA)

I've been researching and re-discovering some great pieces of music that I hope to share this evening. Included will be some rare Jerry Garcia Band and a track or two from the Jefferson Airplane....

The November gig was great and we hope to continue that mojo and have as much fun this evening too. It's the perfect way to start the holiday season so come on down, shake yer bones, see your friends, make some new ones, and have a real good time...
Cover is $5 and there will be $3 Fat Tire beer all night. We kick-off right after the Monday Night Football game.

Our next one probably won't happen until late Janaury or February...What could be better on a rainy night than hanging with friends and listening to the Grateful Dead on Haight Street in San Francisco...

Hope to see you there!

I was surfing the tribes and thought you might want to join my tribe for the band Cubensis cause if your into music ( why I'm asking cause it seems you are) then you'll dig the sounds of Cubensis the only Jerry Garcia approved Grateful Dead tribute act.

The group has its craft so well refined that even members of the Grateful Dead themselves, such as keyboardists Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters. Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir praised the band, saying, “Just love what you do...and of course, you do!”

The band doesn't reproduce the Grateful Dead's songs note for note---though it would be hard for most listeners to tell. The Dead's music is highly improvisational, with rock, country and jazz influences. Cubensis members say there's room for interpretation while staying true to the original. “It’s all about tapping into the same inspirational flow,” says Cubensis guitarist Craig Marshall. Dead guru Jerry Garcia granted Marshall permission to recreate the Dead’s music, as long as he "did a good job" of it. “I told him we played all Grateful Dead songs,” recounts Marshall, to which Garcia replied, in mock surprise, “Oh yeah? So do we!”

The Summer of Love is officially threatening to take over the cinema. Across the Universe is set for fall release, Gus Van Sant’s take on Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is in the works and now moviegoers can start preparing for the most acid-soaked tale of them all: Home Before Daylight, a film based on the formative years of the Grateful Dead. The movie will be adapted from a book by Steve Parish, who has some real

credentials: He was a Dead roadie for 35 years.

The story, which has already been endorsed by Dead guitarist Bob Weir, will chart the history of the band, focusing on those times they chilled with Ken Kesey and Jefferson Airplane in the Haight-Ashbury days. We’re totally stoked for this film, if just to see who gets cast as Grace Slick (please not Lindsay Lohan).

While no release date is set for the film, we anticipate something in the 2009 ballpark, as the script will undoubtedly be a fact-checker’s nightmare (how would you verify whether or not Weir actually saw an eight-headed dragon that breathed purple flames while he was tripping acid during the twenty-third minute of a ?Dark Star? jam?). Plus, the CG effects will likely cost in the millions to make sure those hallucinations look realistic.

So, who would you like to see cast in this film? Paul Giamatti as Pigpen, anyone?
July 5,6,7,8...2007

Unbroken Chain Foundation
invites you to join us for a hands-on project for Homeward Bound of Marin.

The Project:

Homeward Bound of Marin provides temporary shelter for families in need.
Their shelter is located in San Rafael in a converted motel.
Families stay between one to four months. Many of the children are not enrolled in a local school and
need a place to go during the day. Homeward Bound provides a teacher for a classroom that serves children from Pre-School through High School. They serve approximately 15 children per week.

The shelter had one classroom for the children in an adjacent motel which has been recently sold.
Now they need to move and create a new classroom.

Our mission will be to convert a room into a small but attractive and functional classroom.

Here's how you can help:

You can join us on this worthwhile project by helping UBC buy materials,
supplies and furnishing and pitch in to do the refurbishing of the room.

We're looking for no more than 24 people to help (8 per day on July 5, 6, 7).

We're also asking for $250.00 (per person / per day) to help pay for the costs of this project.

It's not all work:

On July 8th those of you who have joined our project are invited to an
intimate party from 5:00 to 10:00 P.M. at a beautiful private residence in Marin.

There you will enjoy adult beverages and a barbeque chicken dinner. (Veggie burger optional).

After dinner, relax and enjoy some music with Phil and some of his great friends.

If you join the project you may bring one additional, non working, person to the party.
The cost for your guest is $125.00

You need to know:

It's work (we estimate approximately 5 or 6 hours each day).

Tasks include: skilled painters (artistically inclined a +), carpentry, laying 12' by 12" floor tiles,
installing cabinets, deep cleaning, hanging light fixtures, making and/or hanging curtains,
general labor, errands, coffee, heavy duty handy person skills, power washer.

Are you a really great paint scraper or sidewalk washer?
We can use you! You'll probably get dirty!

Please note:

You will need to bring a lunch on your day, UBC will provide water.

Selection of participants is solely at the discretion of Unbroken Chain Foundation. Those selected will be notified by phone and/or email. Please include as many ways to contact you as possible.

Any and all travel, lodging, and other expenses are
the sole responsibility of those chosen to help with the project.

Neither Phil Lesh, Cygnus Productions, or Unbroken Chain Foundation will be responsible for any delays or inability to attend the event due to travel arrangements, weather or other circumstances. By volunteering for this project you also agree to release and hold harmless Phil Lesh, Cygnus Productions, Unbroken Chain Foundation, Homeward Bound of Marin and/or the property owner for any injury to you, without limitation, that may occur in the course of your work on the project. You may be asked to sign a specific liability waiver on the day of the project. If you are under 18 you will need to have a parent or guardian sign any waiver required.

Here's how to sign up:

Send a brief email to bbq@phillesh.net
Tell us why you'd like to help and what skills you can bring to the project.
(Most any skills are welcome)

Van Sant Tests Electric Kool-Aid Acid
Source: Variety
June 11, 2007

Nearly 40 years after its original publication, Tom Wolfe's hallucinogenic novel The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is headed for the big screen. Gus Van Sant is attached to direct, and Lance Black ("Big Love") will write the script.

The book told the story of a cross-country road trip that "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" author Ken Kesey orchestrated with a group called the Merry Pranksters. Driving in a psychedelically painted bus from California to visit the World's Fair in New York in 1964, Kesey and his band used the trip as a way to turn on those they met to the mind-expanding wonders of LSD.

Kesey ingested the drug while he wrote "Cuckoo's Nest," crediting the hallucinogen for many of the ideas in the book.

The film will focus on Kesey and include events that occurred after the road trip.

The Scoop:
>
> Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful
> Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at
> Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will
> declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.
>
> The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star
> Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead
> concert.
>
> The Mayor's Proclamation is as follows:
>
> Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca
>
> Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly
> credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock &
> Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the
> musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and
>
> Whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall
> on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a
> concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and
> transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical
> improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and
>
> Whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in
> attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable &
> familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th
> 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and
>
> Whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a
> community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread
> acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and
>
> Whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is
> nothing like a Grateful Dead concert",
>
> Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca,
> and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May
> 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead
> Day in the City of Ithaca.
I just wanted to pop in at let you know about Goodstock 2007, if you haven't already heard. It's being produced by Artie Kornfeld (Woodstock 69) and Doug McClurg, and from what I'm seeing already, it just might be the place to go this summer. I've pasted their release below. If you're interested - pass this along. It could be the music event of this century.

I know they're also looking for tribute bands. Bands and soloacts should send all presskits and inquiries to allan@retro69.net, not Goodstock.
Hope to see everyone there -

Goodstock 2007: LAST CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL WOODSTOCK 69!

GOODSTOCK 2007 MUSIC FESTIVAL. 3 DAYS OF PEACE & MUSIC
FROM THE CREATORS OF WOODSTOCK and the MIND GARAGE

GOODSTOCK 2007 will bring together the most amazing 60's and 70's bands from coast to coast for a 3-day festival. Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mercy and dozens of others, including the Electric Prunes, will reunite for this musical extravaganza. Experience the music, rock culture, peace and brotherhood of that era! Bands and fans - from Boston to Berkeley - will finally experience the musical event that they have waited decades for since Woodstock!

“I have watched the attempts to copy Woodstock by others, “ comments Artie Kornfeld, Goodstock 2007 promoter and co-creator of Woodstock 1969. "To me, these were over-commercialized attempts to take a great event and use it to rip-off rock and peace lovers. I consider Goodstock 2007 to be the first real attempt to have another 3 days of peace and music."

Goodstock 2007 is produced and promoted by Larry McClurg, of 60's band Mind Garage, and Artie Kornfeld, famed music industry song writer, manager, producer, and most notable as co-creator of the 1969 WOODSTOCK MUSIC AND ART FAIR - rock history's greatest 'happening' - on Yasgur's farm in upstate New York.

With nearly 50 bands booked to date, Goodstock 2007 will be held July 19 - 21, 2007 on 1000 rolling acres at the Good Evening Ranch in Summersville, West Virginia. Like Woodstock 1969, Goodstock 2007 is a 3-day music and camping event. The ranch will be transformed into Goodstock Village, as a festival of the sixties offering memorabilia, clothing and band attire, a 60’s museum style exhibit, bands performing continually, as well as a San Francisco style light show.

Camp in the Village or stay in nearby hotels. The Village will accommodate bands and music festival fans from nearly every state in the USA, as well as countries worldwide. Unlike Woodstock's for-profit imitators of recent years, Goodstock admission prices - that include camping - start at $28.00 for one day and go up to $75.00 for all 3 days. Goodstock 2007 is all about peace and music instead of generating profit.

According to Larry McClurg, Goodstock promoter, "Imagine the excitement of seeing the stars and legends of rock who played the Fillmore East, West and Woodstock, with the bands who opened for them, and the fans who were there, all in one place again. That's what Goodstock 2007 is. This is not an attempt to go back, re-create or re-visit. It is a new 'happening' and an opportunity for the whole family to experience a re-awakening of the ideals of peace and togetherness through music."

More information on the event, band line-up, and purchase of tickets is available by visiting the Goodstock website at: www.goodstock2007.com/

GOODSTOCK is produced and promoted by
Larry McClurg, Artie Kornfeld and Goodstock LLC.

If you guys can help me that'd be great.

Thanks in advance.

On May 8, 1977 the Grateful Dead played what has become one of their
most celebrated performances at Cornell University’s Barton Hall (while
mainly was stellar show, the 5/8/77 gig also gained notoriety
over the years due to the crisp soundboards that circulated). The Dark
Star Orchestra will mark the thirty year anniversary of this night with
its own show in Ithaca, New York. Rather than Barton Hall, DSO will take
the stage at the State Theatre on Tuesday May 8. In addition, while the
Dark Star Orchestra typically doesn’t reveal which show it will
interpret until after the performance itself, on this occasion the band
has announced that it will indeed deliver the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77
show in its entirety. The second set is the huge one, opening with one
of the Grateful Dead’s earliest moves from Scarlet Begonias into Fire
on the Mountain followed by a standalone Estimated Prophet and then a
passage from St. Stephen: into Not Fade Away back into St. Stephen
and then a climatic Moning Dew.

It's been a while since I last played this album...usually heading straight to something live or earlier studio work. But it really hit the spot this morn.

This was the first Grateful Dead I ever heard. I've had more than a few people tell me that they can't believe I ended up liking the Dead after having that album as my introduction, but I really do dig it. : )
